Your website works 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, providing customers with information about your business, allowing them to enquire about your products and services, and place orders. Keeping it reliable and protecting the data it collects takes ongoing care.

The critical PHP security updates released on 21 October 2026 demonstrate why that care is so important – and why having someone responsible for your website can make a big difference.

What happened?

PHP is software that runs behind the scenes on many websites, including WordPress.

Two critical vulnerabilities (CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619) were found in PHP and required immediate security updates. If exploited, these vulnerabilities could allow an attacker to execute malicious code on an affected server without logging in, potentially putting websites and the data they contain at risk.

The PHP team released security patches and urged users to update immediately. Temporary protective measures could reduce exposure to specific attack paths, but only an update provided a complete solution.

This was an issue with the underlying PHP software. Updating WordPress plugins alone would not resolve it; the PHP installation on the server also needed to be patched.

How AFWD responded

The PHP security patch was applied to the hosting I manage late on the afternoon of 21 October. I then conducted security checks and an audit that evening, followed by additional checks the following morning.

Those checks did not reveal any indications of compromise. This provides reassurance based on what was checked, while continued monitoring remains important as threats and recommendations evolve.

For clients, having this support means someone is monitoring alerts, determining what they mean for their website, and coordinating the required action.

Why regular maintenance is essential

A website may appear perfectly normal while running software with a known security vulnerability. Waiting for a visible problem can leave an issue unresolved.

Effective maintenance includes several components:

  • Software updates: Keeping WordPress, plugins, themes and the hosting environment up to date.
  • Security monitoring: Looking for warning signs that require further investigation.
  • Backups and recovery: Maintaining appropriate backups and verifying that recovery is possible.
  • Access protection: Using strong passwords, appropriate permissions and multi-factor authentication wherever available.
  • Post-change checks: Checking that key website functions still work after updates.

Each serves a different purpose. Updates address known vulnerabilities, monitoring helps identify problems, and backups provide a means of recovery if something goes wrong. Together, they help reduce the likelihood and impact of an incident.

How AI is changing the threat

AI can help security researchers find vulnerabilities and develop defences. It can also help attackers work faster and conduct attacks on a larger scale.

The UK’s National Cyber Security Centre warns that AI is shortening the time between vulnerability discovery and exploitation. Prompt security updates and good everyday security practices are therefore becoming increasingly important.

For business owners, the practical response is to maintain software, protect access, monitor for problems and prepare for recovery. These measures remain valuable whether an attack uses AI or more traditional methods.
